St. Andrew's Church at Kildwick - Missions

P.O. Box 5627 Kampala, UGANDA

27 March 2002

Dear Friends,

Just a short note to go with our Easter card. No doubt you have all been as busy with your Holy Week and Easter services as we have. On Palm Sunday we borrowed a donkey in order to give our Sunday School children a taste of what the first Palm Sunday was like. We had wanted the children to process Down the aisle of the Cathedral with the donkey, but when we practised on Saturday the donkey refused to go into the church! So we had free donkey rides for all the children after the services instead!

Here in Uganda we don't have palm crosses on Palm Sunday. Instead, people can buy small palm branches for 100 shillings (about 4p), which they wave while singing All glory, praise and honour Some of the children also waved banana leaves.

On Good Friday we are having a special Family service telling the story of Christ's suffering. Members of the choir, Youth Fellowship and a local primary school will be doing dramatised readings of the story. On Easter Sunday the Boys and Girls Brigade band will be playing in the service, at which the Bishop will be present.

Children are just receiving their "0" Level results now (similar to your GCSE's), and their parents are trying to find enough money to send them back to school for `A "levels. There is no free secondary education here. Some young people are going to be disappointed. Six lucky ones are supported by a termly collection at the Cathedral.

Wishing you all a very blessed and happy Easter...!
John and Georgina Castle, Simon, Matt and Adam
